Update (see blue text) 11/17/14 1:15p - Severe Weather Notice: The National Weather Service forecasts low temperature around 32 degrees tonight, Monday, November 17, 2014, with low windchill of 24 degrees. Wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Tonight will be clear and cold, although slightly warmer than last night.

Severe Weather Notice: The National Weather Service forecasts low temperatures around 30 degrees and wind chill at 25 degrees and below after 5pm. It's predicted to be very windy with an east wind around 30mph, and gusts as high as 39mph beginning Tuesday, November 11th. On Wednesday, November 12th there is a chance of rain before 11pm, then rain, possibly mixed with freezing rain. The expected low temperature is 32, with wind chill below 25 degrees after 8pm.

Following our recent training events for Multnomah County employees and East County Police and Sheriff's Office, Yellow Brick Road participated in two awesome community events this weekend. Outreach workers Heather Penzel and Michaela Voorhees tabled Reed College's Community Day this morning, meeting students and spreading the word about our upcoming public training event next Sunday. Meanwhile, Associate Director Dennis Lundberg (and daughter Kallisti!) joined Boom Arts and PICA/TBA for a lively community panel discussion focused on Arts and Social Change. We met some inspired and inspiring folks from all walks of life who are devoted to enriching the community and improving the lives of vulnerable young people. We hope to see you all next Sunday for our YBR Training focused on safer sex practices and risk reduction for homeless youth. Drop a line to RSVP: dlundberg@janusyouth.org  

FREE YBR TRAINING EVENT 9/28

Yellow Brick Road provides free training events to the community on a quarterly basis. These events are FREE and available to anyone over 18 who may wish to learn more about street outreach, volunteer opportunities with Janus Youth Programs and other topics related to youth homelessness, poverty, exploitation and social justice. This is a great opportunity to meet the current outreach volunteers, staff and program supervisor. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about homeless youth resources and street outreach in Washington and Oregon. Applications are always on hand for anyone who wishes to join the team, but there is absolutely no obligation.

Our next training will take place in downtown Portland on Sunday September 28, 2014 from 2pm until 5pm. This month we welcome you to join us and our guest speaker Kiera Hansen from Cascade AIDS Project for an in-depth discussion on Safer Sex Practices and Risk Reduction for young people experiencing homelessness. This will be a candid workshop focusing on how outreach workers and youth advocates can share accurate sex health information honestly and directly while also debunking popular misinformation. Light lunch will be provided. We hope you will join us.

Community Partnerships For Meaningful Engagement

We wish to thank our Homeless Youth Liaison partners Officer Hettman and Officer Yakots and Central Precinct's Sgt. DeLand for joining Yellow Brick Road at our training event yesterday. Over the past several months the new downtown Portland Police "foot team" has made tremendous strides toward downtown community outreach and positive engagement with some of our community's most vulnerable folks. We support the compassionate methodology and spirit of partnership in which Commander Day and Sgt. DeLand are leading this team.

THANKS TO YBR VOLUNTEER ALLEN BUTLER!

We'd like to give a very special shout-out to longtime Yellow Brick Road volunteer Allen Butler today. Allen began volunteering with YBR in June, 2006 with his wife Stella who has been a volunteer with Janus herself for more than a decade! This coming June will mark Allen's 8th year with YBR...but that's not all. Allen is a software designer by profession and he has worked closely with the program to develop our newly revised street outreach database. It's not the first time Allen has contributed his technological support to the program. Back in 2006 Allen launched our first computerized data tracking system. This new database not only helps the program make the leap into the modern age with a confidential web-supported system, but it also allows us to go paperless as we support a more "green" approach to important data reporting. On behalf of everyone at Janus Youth Programs, THANK YOU Allen! It is dedicated folks like you who make YBR the acclaimed program that we are proud to be.   

KIWANIS CLUB of PORTLAND SUPPORTS JANUS YOUTH!

We wish to send a warm thank you to Kiwanis Club of Portland for their ongoing support of Yellow Brick Road, especially Gilda Powell, our very own "Patron Saint of Socks", and Connie Shipley (pictured above in colorful hat for charity). Every month Gilda delivers brand new socks to Janus Youth Programs on behalf of Kiwanis which are distributed every night to youth experiencing homelessness right here in downtown Portland. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 10:00 AM today, through 4:00 PM on Friday, February 7. Forecasted temperatures and windchills remain severe for Thursday and Friday nights, with lows in the low twenties and high teens, and windchills into the single digits. Additionally, forecasts now call for significant snow accumulation Thursday night through Sunday afternoon, with three-to-seven inches of snow accumulation possible this afternoon into tonight alone.

Severe Weather Notice: The National Weather Service forecasts significant winter conditions from Wednesday, February 5th through Sunday morning, February 9th, 2014. Forecasted conditions for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night will be very cold with temperatures in the lower-twenties and teens and wind chills dipping into the single digits. overnight lows between 12° and 24° F through Saturday. Snow showers are possible with accumulation possible for Friday night into Saturday. Temperatures are forecasted to moderate through Saturday night into Sunday morning, but forecasted windchills remain in the lower twenties with transitional periods of freezing rain possible that night.
